What ever happened to the golden rule? That fairly straightforward and simple adage that recommends one treat others as they, themselves, would like to be treated. In my world, it would mean that friends and colleagues support each other rather than act in competition. That kind words are favoured over cruel or worse, words that may sound complimentary but are truly not. Rather than being met with shock at an accomplishment, why can’t we be more excited for those who achieve them? When a friend is feeling down can’t we be encouraging rather than telling them to just give up on their dreams?
I get the psychology behind all of this….our own fears and perceived inadequacies, and sometimes just impatience…but it definitely sucks. So what do you do?
Be the change you wish to see.
The phrase keeps floating through my mind. Sounds simple enough, but it’s not. Quite often my tendency is toward flinging mud and other small projectiles at the offenders, but again, not likely the right option.
